We have developed several interactive platforms at Forensic Architecture, including Plataforma Ayotzinapa and El Junquito. This post describes how to use our two OSS projects timemap and datasheet-server together to create an interactive platform without any software development, using only Google Sheets.

For our contribution to the 2019 Whitney Biennal in New York, we constructed a machine learning workflow to identify Triple Chaser gas canisters, a 'less lethal' munition manufactured by Defense Technology, which is a subsidiary of the Safariland group, an arms manufacturer owned by Warren Kanders, the vice chair of the Whitney's board.

It streamlines a web crawler that can operate across various platforms (Youtube, Twitter, Facebook) and run code that can analyse downloaded media in a range of ways, including optical character recognition and machine learning computer vision.

In order to train machine learning classifiers, a large dataset containing the object of interest is usually necessary. As an office of architects and animators, we have experience generating images using simulated objects and environment. This post details experiments we have been running to supplement a dataset of real images with synthetic counterparts.

TimeMap is a standalone frontend application that allows to explore and monitor events in time and space. TimeMap uses mapbox satellite imagery as a backdrop by default, and uses Leaflet and d3 to visually map information.

Querying data directly from spreadsheets is brittle, as it relies on the maintenance of a rigid structure in the sheets at all times. By putting Datasheet Server as a proxy that sits in between source spreadsheets and their consumers, it is possible to dynamically modify sheets without breaking applications. A data admin can use Datasheet Server to ensure that applications always receive eligible data, without foregoing the spreadsheets as sources of truth.
